Psychological Support for Sports Injuries Applications Now Open for 2026/27

From prevention to returning to the field

Injured athletes may experience psychological difficulties that cannot always be taken into account in the context of their support, which focuses on aspects related to training and performance optimization, i.e., their state of health. This issue is increasingly being raised in sports organizations, but to date, professionals lament a lack of training (no university diploma currently available).

Training objectives

The training will cover the phases typically identified:

  • prevention (which protective factors versus risk factors)
  • managing the injury episode (listening phase)
  • education/rehabilitation phase
  • return to activity (managing anxiety about re-injury in particular).

Skills acquired at the end of the training

  • Minimum proficiency in qualitative tools (conducting and analyzing semi-structured interviews) and quantitative tools (administering and interpreting topic-specific questionnaires)
  • support techniques (mental imagery, relaxation, active listening, goal setting)
  • method for developing a follow-up plan.

Targeted career opportunities

  • sports coaching teams
  • high-level sports teams (coaching, medical, and paramedical professions).

Practical information

  • Target audience: Students in initial or continuing education
  • Teaching period: September to June

Club management

Contact:
Arnaud Roussel, PAST

This university diploma is part of an initiative to bring the university and the professional world closer together, and more specifically to acquire knowledge of club management. Co-developed by the UFR Staps, the continuing education department, and the Comiti company, this diploma is open to learners who hold a high school diploma or equivalent. Primarily designed to enhance volunteer skills, this degree is also open to employees of sports organizations and high-level athletes wishing to prepare for a career change. In this context, this degree is fully complementary to a state certificate.
It is also possible to access this degree through VAP (validation of acquired experience).

This approach is based on the following observations:

  • The professionalization of clubs over the past several years
  • The difficulty club managers have in keeping up with changes to the sports code
  • The difficulties clubs face in diversifying their sources of funding

Our approach to professionalization is based on the following logic:

  • A 100% online training program that allows everyone to take courses at their own pace.
  • 21 course modules divided into 9 teaching units.
  • The use of operational digital tools
  • Continuous assessment of acquired knowledge. Courses are available online on the University of Montpellier platform.

Training objectives

In the context of the professionalization of sports associations and the decline in the number of volunteers, it is necessary, on the one hand, to promote volunteer skills and, on the other hand, to support employment growth by combining qualifications from the Ministry of Sports (State Certificates, State Diplomas, Specialized State Diplomas) and universities.

The University Diploma in Club Management and the training program meet these needs.

Skills

This diploma enables learners to develop the following skills:

  • Understanding sports governance in France
  • Application of law and accounting management
  • Project management and goal setting
  • Variations in offers and diversification of funding sources
  • Communication
  • Web marketing
  • Event management
  • Impact assessments

Career opportunities

  • Become a volunteer in a club
  • Take on a volunteer position of responsibility in a club (President, Secretary, Treasurer)
  • Take up a position as an administrative or development-related employee in a relevant public club.

Prerequisites

  • Being concerned and interested in the development of sports associations
  • High school diploma or equivalent

The training program draws on the various aspects of the profession to enable trainees to integrate directly into a performance unit for a high-level club or training center.

Targeted skills:

Candidates will be able to produce an analysis report in response to a request from the coach. Designing this report will require creating coding windows for data collection, either deferred or live, exporting this data for interpretation, extracting relevant elements, and presenting them in a concise and explicit manner so that their use leads to performance. In this context, the construction of dynamic databases will be at the heart of the case studies.

  • Present, disseminate, summarize, and archive data.
    • Create an environment for sharing analyses based on target audiences (president, physical trainer, physiotherapist, coaches, players).
    • Enrich the video with multiple shots and 3D animation to reinforce the information to be conveyed in the context of match preparation, motivational messages, and youth training.
  • Recover images, choose the most suitable solution (drones, IP cameras, control room, HD cameras)
  • Archive information in the form of dynamic, targeted databases: recruitment of future players, training of young players, club DNA, sports season.

Preventing loss of independence and falls in the elderly: the PEM-ES3 method

Coordinators:
; Pierrick Bernard (Associate Professor – HDR), Gerontologist. Department of Sports Science and Physical Education, University of Montpellier.
; Hubert Blain (Full Professor), Geriatrician. Head of the Gerontology Unit at Montpellier University Hospital.

Training objectives

The training aims to provide participants with a solid understanding of the fundamentals of gerontology, guidelines on fall prevention, and assessment and intervention methodologies—such as Posture-Balance-Motor Skills (PEM) and Health Education (HE)—to help prevent the loss of independence and falls among older adults.

Improving functional abilities and quality of life through physical activity combined with health education is a central objective of gerontological recommendations. These practices aim to mitigate the effects of aging. A large number of studies conducted among various populations—including independent, frail, and functionally impaired individuals—demonstrate that improvements in physiological, psychocognitive, and behavioral functions are possible.

For health purposes and to prevent the effects of aging on functional and psycho-behavioral abilities, the overall objective of the PEM-ES method is to combine, in a complementary manner, a program of adapted physical activities with a health education approach. There are four specific objectives:

  • optimize autonomy,
  • develop functional and balancing abilities,
  • restore confidence in motor skills,
  • improve behaviors that promote good health.

Targeted skills
Upon completion of the training, the following skills will have been developed:

  • Basic understanding of the “bio-psycho-social” determinants of aging and dependent populations,
  • Knowledge of fall prevention and recent international and national guidelines,
  • A study of methodologies for assessing motor and behavioral abilities in relation to fall prevention among older adults,
  • Expertise in the pedagogical approach to motor skills involving posture, balance, and motor coordination,
  • Proficiency in the concepts of health education and their application to older adults,
  • Ability to plan, facilitate, and evaluate the effects of one's teaching.

Course duration
Class time: 36 hours
Optional internship upon request

Training Schedule The training takes place over a single week in mid-January each year.

Assessment based on an individual report submitted within one month of the training.

Prices:
Introductory Course for Students: 150 euros.

Continuing education: 450 euros.
