Preventing falls in older adults: the PEM-ES method
Responsibleparties
, Pierrick Bernard (Associate Professor – HDR)
Training objectives
The training aims to provide a mastery of the basics of gerontology, assessment methodologies, and educational interventions such as PEM and Health Education (HE) for older adults.
Improving functional abilities and quality of life through physical activity combined with health education is a key objective of gerontological recommendations. These practices will limit the effects of aging. A large number of studies conducted on various populations of independent, frail, or dependent individuals demonstrate the potential for improvement in osteoarticular, muscular, postural, cardiovascular, metabolic, behavioral, cognitive, and psychological functions.
For health purposes and to prevent the effects of aging on functional and psychosocial abilities, the overall objective of the method is to combine a program of adapted physical activities such as "Posture-Balance-Motor Skills" (PEM) with a Health Education (HE) approach. There are four operational objectives:
- optimize autonomy,
- develop functional and balancing abilities,
- restore confidence in motor skills,
- improve behaviors that promote good health.
Targeted skills
Following the training, the following skills are targeted:
- Basic knowledge of the "biopsychosocial" determinants of aging and dependent populations.
- Basic knowledge of motor skills assessment methodologies; application to balance and musculoskeletal functions in older adults.
- Mastery of the pedagogical treatment of motor situations involving posture, balance, and motor skills.
- Mastery of health education concepts and their application to senior citizens
- Ability to plan, facilitate, and evaluate the effects of one's teaching.

Psychological support for sports injuries
From prevention to returning to the field
Injured athletes may experience psychological difficulties that cannot always be taken into account in the context of their support, which focuses on aspects related to training and performance optimization, i.e., their state of health. - The use of operational digital tools
- Continuous assessment of acquired knowledge. Courses are available online on the University of Montpellier platform.
