Psychological Support for Sports Injuries Applications Now Open for 2026/27
From prevention to returning to the field
Injured athletes may experience psychological difficulties that are not always addressed in the context of their care, which tends to focus on training-related issues, performance optimization, or their physical health. This issue is increasingly being discussed within sports organizations, but to date, professionals have expressed concern about a lack of training (there are currently no university-level certificates available).
Training Objectives
Understand the psychological challenges posed by an injury and take this aspect into account when supporting the athlete in order to facilitate an optimal return to competitive activity, in collaboration with the athlete’s entire support staff (medical, technical, physical trainers, and mental health professionals).
The training will cover the following standard phases:
- prevention (protective factors versus risk factors)
- Managing the injury episode (listening phase)
- education/rehabilitation phase
- returning to activity (including managing the anxiety of re-injury).
Skills acquired upon completion of the training
- Basic proficiency in qualitative methods (conducting and analyzing semi-structured interviews) and quantitative methods (administering and interpreting questionnaires specific to the topic)
- support techniques (mental imagery, relaxation, active listening, goal-setting)
- method for developing a monitoring plan.
Target career opportunities
- athletic coaching staff
- elite sports teams (coaching, medical, and paramedical professions).
Practical Information
- Target audience: Students in initial or continuing education programs
- Academic year: September through June
Applications
Applications for admission to the DE program “Psychological Support for Injured Athletes: From Prevention to Return to Play” must be submitted exclusively online via theeCandidat application(Base Rouge) from March 9 to June 30, 2026.

GENERAL ORGANIZATION
This program allows second-year undergraduate students to earn the BPJEPS (Professional Certificate in Sports Education) with a specialization in “Sports Instructor” and a concentration in “Aquatic and Swimming Activities,” as well as the Ministry of Sports’ state-certified lifeguard certification, in addition to their academic training upon completion of their second year of undergraduate studies ( ).

Preventing loss of independence and falls among the elderly: the PEM-ES3 method
PrincipalInvestigators
; Pierrick Bernard (Assistant Professor – HDR), Gerontologist, Department of Sports Science and Physical Education, University of Montpellier.
; Hubert Blain (Full Professor – Hospital Practitioner), Geriatrician, Director of the Gerontology Center at Montpellier University Hospital.
Training Objectives
The training aims to provide participants with a solid understanding of the fundamentals of gerontology, guidelines on fall prevention, and assessment and intervention methodologies—such as Posture-Balance-Motor Skills (PEM) and Health Education (HE)—to help prevent the loss of independence and falls among older adults.
Improving functional abilities and quality of life through physical activity combined with health education is a central objective of gerontological recommendations. These practices aim to mitigate the effects of aging. A large number of studies conducted among various populations—including independent, frail, and functionally impaired individuals—demonstrate that improvements in physiological, psychocognitive, and behavioral functions are possible.
For health purposes and to prevent the effects of aging on functional and psycho-behavioral abilities, the overall objective of the PEM-ES method is to combine, in a complementary manner, a program of adapted physical activities with a health education approach. There are four specific objectives:
- maximize battery life,
- develop functional and balancing skills,
- restore confidence in motor skills,
- promote healthy behaviors.
Target Skills
Upon completion of the training, the following skills will be acquired:
- Basic understanding of the “biopsychosocial” determinants of aging and dependent populations,
- Knowledge of fall prevention and recent international and national guidelines,
- Study of methodologies for assessing motor and behavioral abilities in relation to fall prevention and older adults,
- Expertise in the pedagogical approach to motor skills involving posture, balance, and motor coordination,
- Proficiency in the concepts of health education and their application to older adults,
- Ability to plan, facilitate, and evaluate the impact of one's instructional activities.
