Studying abroad through an exchange program / Incoming exchange students

Exchange programs allow students enrolled at a foreign university to continue their studies at the University of Montpellier for up to one year, subject to the terms and conditions of the program. The period of study at the University of Montpellier must be an integral part of the students’ academic program at their home university. It must be recognized and credited toward their degree.

At your home university:

  • You must be enrolled at a university with which the University of Montpellier has established a partnership that includes student exchange programs
  • You should contact the International Relations Office at your home university to submit your application. This office will provide you with all the necessary information about exchange programs.
  • You must be nominated by your university. Once you have been selected, your university will need to provide us with your name, contact information, field of study, and the duration of your stay.

Discussion periods

  • First semester (fall semester): early September through mid-January
  • Second semester (spring semester): mid-January to late June
  • You must select courses that align with your degree program and are equivalent to those you are taking at your home university, in consultation with your academic advisor, before you depart. If you pass the exams, these courses must be recognized by your home university upon your return.
  • If you are coming through the Erasmus+ program, you must earn a total of 30 ECTS credits per semester.
Students coming from a non-European university are not required to earn 30 ECTS credits.
  • The vast majority of courses are taught in French (with the exception of courses focused on learning other languages). You must meet the language proficiency requirement set by the UFR STAPS: Level B2.
  • Bachelor's Degree Programs / Course Catalog
  • For master’s students: see the master’s degree programs on this page
  • You must list the courses you have selected on the academic contract, specifying the exact course title and the number of credits.
  • Your academic contract must be completed and signed by you and your academic advisor. It must be submitted to the STAPS Department along with your application materials.

Amendment to the original Learning Agreement

  • Sometimes the study agreement is modified once you are enrolled in the STAPS department. These changes are generally due to scheduling conflicts (classes held at the same time). You will make these changes with the approval of the faculty members responsible for your STAPS studies and your home university. Any changes must be approved by the faculty members who signed your original study agreement.

As an exchange student, you have certain responsibilities

  • Remain enrolled at your home university during your stay at the UFR STAPS in Montpellier.
  • Obtain approval from your home university for the study plan you wish to follow at the UFR STAPS. Your study plan must be detailed in a Learning Agreement and include three signatures: yours, that of your academic advisor at your home university, and that of the academic advisor at the UFR STAPS Montpellier.
  • Have at least a B2 level in French.
  • Meet the deadlines for submitting or sending the documents requested by the Office of International Relations (OIR)
  • Please stop by the Office of International Relations as soon as you arrive and before you leave Montpellier, once you have finished your exams.
